The device has at least one distance sensor (1), a steering angle sensor (2) and a computer unit (3). A path sensor (4) on the vehicle (8) detects the distance covered. The distance sensor is arranged in the region of the side of the vehicle to monitor side obstacles. A memory stores position data relating to a detected obstacle, even when the obstacle is outside the detection range of the distance sensor.
