PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting element and an organic electroluminescent element having a diffraction grating for improving light extraction efficiency without causing an unnatural feeling in a viewer. SOLUTION: This light emitting element is a self luminous element with an refractive index of a light emitting part higher than that of air, and has a diffraction grating structure on a surface on a light emitting side of the light emitting element, and a light emission minimum in emitting white light is not more than 50% of a light emission maximum. Either of singlet and triplet material can be used as a light emitting material. Furthermore, the light emitting element can be obtained from material of not limited to a three-wavelength type but a two component type. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
