Barcode having enhanced visual quality

The method involves creating a two-dimensional barcode having data related to an item e.g. document. A graphic (25) is overlaid on the two-dimensional barcode to make it visually significant. The visually significant barcode is placed on the item. The two-dimensional barcode is created by obtaining a data related to the item and the data is encoded in the two-dimensional barcode. Independent claims are also include for the following: (a) an apparatus that uses an enhanced visually significant barcode with an item (b) a barcode with enhanced visual quality (c) a system that encodes and decodes an enhanced visually significant barcode.
