Novel lactone derivatives of the general formula wherein A is -CH 2 -CH 2 - or -CH = CH-, R is hydrogen, a benzyl group or a C 1-6 alkyl group and R1 is hydrogen or a halogen, with the proviso that at least one R1 is a halogen, are prepared by halogenation of a derivative of the formula or the corresponding dihydro derivative formed by hydrogenation of the double bond in the heterocyclic ring thereof, or the corresponding tetrahydro derivative in which the ketone group has also been reduced to an alcoholic hydroxyl group, which in either case has the hydroxyl groups attached to the fused benzene ring protected by alkyl or benzyl radicals, followed optionally by removal of said protecting radicals; or by treatment of a lactone of the first formula above wherein at least one R1 is chlorine with potassium iodide. Pharmaceutical compositions, having estrogenic activity and being useful in increasing the rate of growth of animals, comprise a nutrient ration and a lactone derivative of the first general formula above.
