A device for manipulating a gas sampling tube 2 in blast or other furances comprises a doubleacting fluid piston unit comprising a piston 10 axially movable in a cylinder 7 fixed with respect to the furnace, tong 12 which, according to the direction of movement of the tube 2, clamp the tube or open, and means for controlling the tongs according to the direction of displacement of the piston 10. The cyclinder 7 is fixed relative to the inside wall 1 of the furnace by arms 8a, 8b whose length is adjustable by means of parts 9a, 9b. Tubes 3 and 4 concentric with the tube 2 lead to valve 5 which is closed when the tube 2 is not in placed. A stuffing box 6 seals against the tube 2 and the piston 10 carries a tube 11 and the tongs 12. If it is desired to move the tube 2 into the furnace, the tongs, which are in the form of pivoted V-shaped members are moved by a pneumatic piston unit 13 so that their right hand ends, in Fig. 1, grip the tube 2. Air under pressure from the same source is supplied to the cylinder 7. At the end of the stroke of the piston 10 the air supply is fed to the reverse side of this piston and is cut off from the unit 13, so that the piston 10 and tube 11 move to the left in Fig. 1 leaving the tube 2 in extended position. Further movements of the piston 10 extend the tube 2 further into the furnace and if the stroke of the piston is known then the position of the connection 16 for the collection of the gas sample may be found. The tube 2 may be withdrawn from the furnace by reversing the air supply to the unit 13 and causing the tongs to grip the tube as the piston 10 moves to the left in Fig. 1. Connections 14,15 for water cooling of the tube 2 may be provided, and the tube may also be used to take pressure and temperature measurements in the furnace. |
