The motor vehicle gear shift lever (1) guide has a guide grill (5) across which the lever can be placed in different positions. It has two sets of rails (7,8) extending in orthogonal directions. The lever is slidably mounted with respect to one of the rails, which is itself slidable with respect to the other rail assembly. The rails are curved to allow a pivoting movement of the lever around virtual pivots with large pivot radii.
