<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase flexibility of editing by loosening restriction, with respect to a shortest clip length which is required for editing from a point to a next in order to make seamless reproduction of an edited result of a MPEG stream. <P>SOLUTION: A controller 7 detects the editing point in the MPEG stream, and detects minimum necessary non-displayed pictures to be decoded beforehand, in order to decode a picture displayed behind the editing point. The controller 7 calculates a start point, indicating a timing for starting decoding of the non-displayed pictures, and based on the start point, controls decoding of the MPEG stream by decoders 4<SB>1</SB>to 4<SB>K</SB>in picture units, and controls selection with a switcher 5 with respect to the output from the decoders 4<SB>1</SB>to 4<SB>K</SB>based on the editing point.
