The method involves dividing the input signal mixture (1) into sub-regions that are filtered in separate filtering functional elements (2) in respect of a defined signal characteristic of a time, spatial or spectral nature and combining the thus defined sub-regions with definable priorities to form an output signal mixture that is fed to subsequent filter operations. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a device for selecting discrete signals from a signal mixture.
