PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide super-high density recording of a 100 Gb/inch2class. SOLUTION: The magnetic head for recording and reproducing the signals recorded on a recording medium is provided with a substrate, a magnetic head core having a magnetic gap disposed on the substrate, and a mageto-resistive (MR) effect element disposed on the magnetic head core. The magnetic head core is so disposed that the film thickness direction around the magnetic gap of the magnetic head core and the track width direction of the recording medium are aligned to the same direction. Also, the magnetic head core is provided with windings disposed to enclose at least part of the magnetic head core and the windings generate magnetic fields, thereby recording the signals on the recording medium. Further, the magnetic head has an insulating layer provided with the MR effect element on the magnetic head core and a pinned layer disposed on the side opposite to the magnetic head core with respect to the insulating layer. The magnetic head core has a soft magnetic layer in the position corresponding to at least the insulating layer and the soft magnetic layer is shared as the free layer of the MR effect element.
