PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust method for an internal combustion engine for suitably controlling various operations related to the collection or discharge of exhaust gas, depending on the collection amount of the exhaust gas held in a collection container. SOLUTION: In the exhaust method for an internal combustion engine 1, the exhaust gas in an exhaust passage 4 is collected and held in the collection container 11 connected with the exhaust passage 4 of the internal combustion engine 1. The collection amount is estimated based on pressure correlating with the collection amount of the exhaust gas in the collection container 11 and the physical quantity of such as a flow rate of the exhaust gas. At least one of an operation collecting the exhaust gas in the collection container 11 and an operation discharging the exhaust gas from the collection container 11 is controlled based on the estimation result of the collection amount.
