PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid titanium catalyst component polymerizing ethylene with a high activity and producing an ethylene polymer having excellent particle properties and to provide a catalyst for polymerization and to provide a method for polymerizing the ethylene. SOLUTION: The solid titanium catalyst component is obtained by bringing a magnesium compound into contact with a liquid titanium compound, increasing the temperature to 20-120°C and keeping the temperature. The catalyst component comprises magnesium, titanium, an alcohol, a polyether and/or a polyvalent carboxylic acid ester. The catalyst component is characterized in that the molar ratio (Mg/Ti) of the magnesium to the titanium is within the range of 1-12 and the catalyst component contains 2-10 wt.% of the titanium, 3-25 wt.% of the alcohol and 1-11 wt.% of the polyether and/or the polyvalent carboxylic acid ester.
