A method for producing a carbon material having a high specific surface area wherein a composite porous article having a network structure skeleton comprising a dried gel of an inorganic oxide is formed and the dried gel is utilized as a support having a structure, wherein a carbon material is formed on the network structure skeleton keeping characteristics of a dried gel of an inorganic oxide having a high specific surface area, or wherein the resulting network structure skeleton having the carbon material formed thereon is further subjected to the removal of the inorganic oxide to thereby enhance the specific surface area of the carbon material. The method is freed of problems associated with conventional methods for producing a carbon porous article comprising carbonizing an organic gel, that an intermediate product is susceptible to shrinkage, increase in density or lowering in the specific surface area and an organic gel is difficult to control its density or specific surface area after its formation.
