PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber having high reliability on hydrogen-resistant characteristics and suitable for WDM transmission in the wavelength range of 1310 nm to 1625 nm, and to provide a method of estimating an optical fiber. SOLUTION: The optical fiber SMF(1) is characterized in that it has a cutoff wavelength of not more than 1310 nm, a transmission loss in the wavelength of 1385 nm before hydrogen exposure of not more than 0.40 dB/km, a transmission loss in the wavelength range of 1310 nm to 1625 nm after hydrogen exposure of not more than 0.40 dB/km, and an electron spin density of non-cross-linked oxygen defects of not more than 1×10<SP>13</SP>spins/g when measured by electron spin resonance after the outer circumference is ground with aqueous hydrofluoric acid until the outer diameter thereof becomes about 50μm.
