PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electroluminescent element using optical resonance effect. SOLUTION: This element has a transparent substrate, a translucent layer formed on the transparent substrate, a first positive electrode layer formed on the translucent layer in a prescribed pattern, a negative electrode layer formed on the first positive electrode layer by total reflection metal films, and an organic layer which is arranged between the first positive electrode layer and the negative electrode layer and which includes at least a light-emitting layer. This is the organic electroluminescent element in which an optical distance from the upper face of the translucent layer to the bottom face of the negative electrode layer is set as the least common multiple of an integral multiple of the half wavelength of the peak wavelength of each colored light. As for the organic electroluminescent element, a luminous efficiency of a plurality of colored lights is improved by the optical resonance effect, and a high quality picture with a high color purity can be provided.
