The invention relates to a retractable centring pin for positioning parts and, in particular, for machining or assembling body or structural parts of a motor vehicle. The inventive tool comprises: a body (28); a moving element (26) which is solidly connected to a pin support (16) having a centring pin (18) mounted thereto, said centring pin co-operating with a centring hole (12) which is disposed in the part (10); and means of driving and guiding the moving element (26) in axial translation between an out position in which the pin penetrates the centring hole and a retracted position in which the part is released. The aforementioned drive means comprise guide means (54, 58, 60) which precisely guide the moving element (26) along only one part of the axial translation stroke (x) thereof, close to the out position. The moving element is mounted in a floating manner along the rest of the stroke and can move laterally along most of the axial translation stroke.
