The switch (1) comprises a pair of cavities (51,52) connected by a passage (2) along which are disposed three electrodes (31,32,33). The two cavities each hold a non-conductive fluid, whilst the passage contains a conductive fluid. Changes between connected and disconnected states are made by using the non-conductive fluid to separate the conductive fluid into non-contiguous conductive portions. Initially the conductive portions (12,13) connect two of the electrodes (32,33), with a gap between the fluid and the conductive fluid (11) isolating the other electrode. A Heater (61) heats the non-conductive fluid (53), which may be a gas, in the cavity (51) so that it flows through a passage (41) to create a gap in the conductive fluid to isolate the electrodes previously connected.
|
