PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sensor having a control specification containing the number of article detection as a control element without using a separate counter. SOLUTION: This sensor is provided with a characteristic amount obtaining means for obtaining an amount of characteristic related with existence of articles from an area to be detected, a determining means for determining existence of articles on the basis of a comparison between the amount of characteristic obtained by the characteristic amount obtaining means and the predetermined threshold value, a count means for counting the number of articles on the basis of a result of determination by the determining means, a first output means for outputting in response to a result of the determination by the determining means, and a second output means for outputting in response to a result of count by the count means.
