PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hair dye which does not dye the hand and the skin, has higher hair-dyeability than those of conventional hair dyes due to excellent impermeability in the hair, and has an excellent conditioning effect. SOLUTION: This hair dye comprises a direct dye, a higher alcohol having a 14 to 22C long chain alkyl group, and at least one selected from the group consisting of the following (A) to (C). (A) A bis(2-alkyl-N-hydroxyethylimidazoline)chloroacetic acid complex type amphoteric surfactant. (B) A quaternary ammonium salt represented by the general formula (I) [R<SP>1</SP>is a lanoline fatty acid residue or a branched alkyl; R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>are each a 1 to 3C alkyl; (n) is an integer of 2 or 3; X is a halogen, ethyl sulfate or methyl sulfate]. (C) A fatty acid amidoamine compound represented by the general formula (II) [R<SP>5</SP>is a 13 to 23C higher fatty acid residue; R<SP>6</SP>is a 1 to 4C alkyl; (y) is an integer of 2 to 4].
