PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To operate a plurality of line sensors as one line sensor, and to prevent picture quality deterioration of an output image caused by changes in the number of thinned-out useless pixels at a joint section of each line sensor, when reduced image data is obtained by thinning out useless pixels of a predetermined number regularly. SOLUTION: A plurality of line sensors 1a-1d have pixels of an mutually identical number and are arranged in series in the main scanning direction. By conducting output operation of the line sensors 1a-1d in parallel with a predetermined timing and changing in order to extract pixel signals outputted simultaneously from each of the line sensors, useless pixels of a predetermined number are thinned out regularly and signals of an extracted useful pixel is rearranged into a normal sequence in order to obtain read-out data. In particular, output operation of the line sensors is conducted with a start timing shifted mutually, so that the number of thinned-out useless pixels at a joint section between line sensors is equal to the one at the remaining sections.
