PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical conversion element capable of reducing the loss of the transmitted light by reflection and a projector provided with the optical conversion element. SOLUTION: An incident side polarizing plate 42B is provided with a substrate 45, a retardation plate body 46 which is an optical conversion element body, and a polarizing plate body 47 which is the optical conversion element body. An intermediate layer 49A is arranged between the substrate 45 and the body 47 and an intermediate layer 49B is arranged between the substrate 45 and the body 46. The intermediate layer 49A has a refractive index between the refractive indices of the body 47 and the substrate 45.
