PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which can inexpensively and easily detect a position of a travel object by obtaining position information from an electric signal which is optically read without arranging a sensor for detecting the position of the travel object like a conventional case and to provide an image forming device. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with a detection pattern for detecting a home position of the travel object disposed in the home position of a reading auxiliary scanning direction in a part or a whole part in a reading main scanning direction and a detection means detecting the position of the travel object from the electric signal which optically reads the detection pattern.
