Photographic material comprises a transparent support having on one side a silver halide emulsion layer and on the other side an antihalation layer comprising an alkali-soluble binder containing an anti-halation dye and, as matting agent, from 1-10 parts by weight per 12 parts of binder of particles of a cellulose ester derived at least in part from a dicarboxylic acid. The cellulose ester may be a mixed ester of acetic acid and a dicarboxylic acid such as malonic, succinic, maleic, citraconic or phthalic acid. The antihalation dye may be one of those disclosed in Specification 790, 023. The binder may be a polycarbonate, polyvinyl alcohol phthalate, condensation products of formaldehyde with salicylic acid and phenoxy acetic acid, or with o-methoxybenzoic acid, or copolymers derived from at least two of the monomers maleic acid semi-esters of maleic acid, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, vinyl butyl ether, styrene and acrylonitrile.
