A device and a method for use when automatically classifying musical compositions into genres, wherein the accuracy of classification is enhance by appropriately setting a genre classification parameter. The device comprises a parameter selection unit (160) that obtains a plurality of candidate genres into which musical compositions are to be classified and, based on the obtained plurality of candidate genres, selects classification parameter type, which is a parameter type to be used for genre classification, from a plurality of parameter types each indicating the feature of a musical composition; and a genre judgment unit (200) that judges, based on the selected classification parameter type, which of the plurality of candidate genres the musical composition belongs to.
