An apparatus for scanning a rail segment (10) for the track layout of a magnetic levitation system comprises marks (162), which are carried by an inspection unit (36) and the position of which is scanned using an electronic camera (164), which is disposed on the end of the rail segment (10). The inspection unit (36) movable along the rail segment (10) comprises a position sensor, which measures the position of the inspection unit (36) relative to one of the ends of the rail segment (10). The position of the inspection unit (10) is communicated wirelessly to an evaluating unit (168), which is further connected to the output of the electronic camera (164).
