The present invention relates to the identification of peptides that specifically inhibit the cleavage activity of presenilins. More specifically, the present invention discloses peptides derived from amyloid precursor protein that specifically inhibit cleavage of amyloid precursor protein by gamma-secretase without affecting the cleavage of notch by the same enzyme. Consequently, these peptides can be efficiently used to prevent plaque deposition in the brain of Alzheimer's disease patients.
