A piston injection unit with a pre-plastification cylinder, for a micro-injection moulding machine for producing micro-mouldings, consists of an injection cylinder and a pre-plastification cylinder which is perpendicular to it. The unit has an injection cylinder (1) containing a cylindrical piston (4). The piston length is such that when it is at the front (S3) of the cylinder, its rear section closes off the channel (7) from the pre-plastifying cylinder (6). When the piston is at its rear location (S1), the channel is clear. The amount of melt (5) that is injected is determined by the position of the piston between points S2 and S3.
