Process for illuminating the bulb unit of a camera (1) having a planar shutter (14), manual focussing and TTL illumination measurement and an external bulb (3) comprises measuring the light intensity reflected onto an object and acquiring the bulb power for the required image illumination by triggering a pre-illumination having a prescribed power using the camera electronics (18). The illuminating time for the illumination with the surrounding light is determined by adjusting a working screen. An Independent claim is also included for a camera/flash gun system for carrying out the above process. Preferred Features: The power of the pre-illumination is changed by the measured reflected light intensity and the measurement and evaluation are automatically repeated with the changed power. The duration and/or amplitude of the pre-illumination can be adjusted depending on the pre-selected working screen.
