发明名称 A method for preparing consolidated articles
摘要
In making articles, fillers are impregnated with highly hydroxylated organosilicon compounds which are characterized by being insoluble in toluene, dried and consolidated into unitary articles by curing the organosilicon impregnants. The fillers are impregnated by contacting them with a solution of at least one organosilanol, organosiloxanol or mixture thereof, wherein there is an average mixture thereof, wherein there is an average of from 0.9 to 1.9 Si-bonded phenyl or alkyl or alkenyl radicals of less than 4 C atoms per Si atom, in an amount such that the fillers take up at least 1.5% by weight of the organosilicon compound(s). The fillers may be silica, asbestos, quartz fibres, glass fibres or flakes, aluminium silicate, aluminium magnesium silicate, diatomaceous earth, alumina, beryllia, silicon carbide, graphite, boron nitride or titanium carbide. The compositions may also contain siloxane curing catalysts. In Example (2) alumina was mixed with a solution obtained by mixing propyltrimethoxysilane with water containing acetic acid, and the resulting slurry was shaped into a disc which was then air dried and heated at 105 DEG C. for 2 hours.ALSO:An article is made by (1) contacting a filler with a solution of at least one organosilanol, organisiloxanol or mixture thereof, which is insoluble in toluene, wherein there is an average of from 0.9 to 1.9 Si-bonded phenyl or alkyl or alkenyl radicals of 1 to 3 C atoms per Si atom, in an amount such that the filler takes up at least 1.5% by wt. of the organosilicon compound(s), (2) drying the treated filler and (3) thereafter curing the organosilicon compound(s) to cosolidate the filler. The fillers (including woven fabrics) may be silica, asbestos, quartz fibres, glass fibres, glass fabrics, aluminium silicate, aluminium magnesium silicate, diatomaceous earth, alumina, titania, beryllia, aluminium, silicon carbide, graphite, boron nitride and titanium carbide; and fibrous or particulated organic materials such as paper, alpha cellulose, fluocarbon resins, phenolic resins, and fibres prepared from polyamides and regenerated cellulose. If desired, curing catalysts, e.g. potassium acetate, amine salts and quaternary ammonium salts, may be added. Examples describe the formation of articles by the above treatment of (1) paper sheets, (2) alumina, (3) glass fibres, (4) sheet mica, (5) flake glass, and (6) asbestos.ALSO:Glass fibres, taken from the bushing and prior to being wound on to the take-up drum, can be coated by applying thereto an aqueous solution of at least one toluene-insoluble organosilanol, organosiloxanol or mixture thereof, wherein there is an average per Si atom of from 0.9 to 1.9 Si-bonded phenyl or aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals of 1 to 3 atoms (see Division C3). In Example (3), a solution obtained by mixing methyltri-, dimethyldi-, phenyltri- and phenylmethyldi-methoxysilanes with distilled water containing acetic acid, was sprayed on to clean glass fibres, which were allowed to dry, and the treated fibres were then compressed into a mat and cured for 3 hours at 120 DEG C.
