The actual position of the vehicle is determined via an on-board position locator (201), this position is paired with a position on a digital map, which has an associated area, esp. state, country, city. A display unit (211) shows the actual vehicle speed and/or a permitted max. speed for at least one type of road within that area. When the indication of actual and/or max. speed changes due to a change in area, an acoustic and/or optical warning is given. The display unit is part of a freely programmed combination instrument. The max. permitted speed for a certain area is highlighted in a scale for the actual vehicle speed. |
