Flame retardant composition comprises a melamine component consisting of melamine and/or condensation products of melamine, where the melamine component is contacted with an alkaline solution of a metal oxide, in which the metal is selected from silicon, zirconium and titanium. An independent claim is also included for a process of preparing a polymer composition, comprising a compounding step of at least one polymer with the flame retardant composition.
