The device has drive and common electrodes (4, 5) disposed on one surface of an electric field receiving unit (3) to jointly define a slit, and a fluorescent layer (6). An electric field is concentrated in vicinity of the slit when a pulsed voltage is applied to the drive electrode to produce a field emission phenomenon. The emitted electrons are applied to the layer when a bias voltage is applied to the common electrode.
