PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device having a structure by which a cell gap between substrates can be strictly controlled. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal device having the structure wherein an upper substrate 1 on which columnar spacers 11 are disposed and a lower substrate 2 on which columnar spacers 12 are disposed are disposed opposite to each other and a liquid crystal layer 3 is interposed between the substrates with a prescribed cell gap, the cell gap over the entire surface of the liquid crystal device can be strictly controlled by making the heights of the spacers different according to the laminated film thickness in the areas where the columnar spacers 11 and 12 are disposed.
