PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing lactic acid economically and in a large amount by shortening the time of production. SOLUTION: This method for producing lactic acid comprises performing an enzyme reaction process of hydrolyzing papermaking sludge and a fermentation process of using glucose produced by the enzyme reaction process as a substrate and converting it to lactic acid at the same time. Thereby, not only that a production cost is saved by using the low cost papermaking sludge but also that the time of production is shortened by performing 2 processes at the same time, and it becomes possible to produce lactic acid in a large amount.
