The invention relates to a method and equipment for hindering the progress of a powerful avalanche falling with high velocity. The method consists of capturing the avalanche in a special protective device (1), that has been placed in an oblong storage box (16) on a mountain slope, in a ravine, at the foot of a mountain slope or wherever the risk of an avalanche is present. The device absorbs the power of the avalanche and in the process converts some of the energy to heat. The heat is created through friction as the avalanche comes into contact with the device and is later dissipated, partially by melting the snow crystals as they press through the equipment and partially through heat transference to the surrounding area via main strings (3,11) and special ground fasteners (2) as the progress of the avalanche is halted.
