PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems that the cost is high and uses of astaxanthin and canthaxanthin are limited because of a method for production with extraction from a natural product though wide applications of the astaxanthin and canthaxanthin are expected and to supply the astaxanthin and canthaxanthin at a low cost. SOLUTION: A new species of actinomyces producing the astaxanthin and canthaxanthin is found out to thereby culture the actinomyces. As a result, the astaxanthin and canthaxanthin can be produced at a lower cost than that of a conventional method for production. The actinomyces belongs to the genus Gordonia and can be grown in a freshwater inorganic nutrient culture medium or a seawater inorganic nutrient culture medium. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
