POLARIZATION MODE DISPERSION COMPENSATION METHOD AND POLARIZATION MODE DISPERSION COMPENSATION APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization mode dispersion compensation method and a polarization mode dispersion compensation apparatus in which deterioration of a transmission quality caused by primary PMD (polarization mode dispersion) is stably compensated without limiting a compensation DGD (differential group delay) value even in a system where a main polarization axis of an optical transmission line changes with the lapse of time.

SOLUTION: Signal light transmitted by an optical transmitter 5 is propagated along an optical transmission path 6, passed through a polarization converting means 1 and then inputted to a specific polarization selecting means 2. In the inputted signal light, a specific polarization component is separated by the specific polarization selecting means 2. When the separated signal light is inputted, a waveform deterioration detecting means 3 detects waveform deterioration. Based upon information on the detected waveform deterioration, a control means 7 controls the polarization converting means 1 so as to minimize the waveform deterioration.
