<PICT:0974454/C1/1> An antibiotic desideus is produced by cultivating streptomyces griseus var. desideus in an aqueous nutrient medium containing a source of carbon and nitrogen under aerobic conditions until substantial desideus is produced. Desideus may be separated by extraction from the water-wet mycelium with a water-miscible organic solvent, concentrating the extract to an aqueous solution, extracting the aqueous solution with a water-immiscible organic solvent for desideus and recovering desideus from the solvent extract. Desideus is a neutral substance which is soluble in halogenated hydrocarbons, aliphatic alcohols, water-immiscible polar organic solvents, alkanones, and water-immiscible organic solvents, has the empirical formula C40H64O12 and elemental analysis C65.42%, H8.64% and O25.85%, has no significant ultraviolet absorption in the 220-320 mm range, has a melting point range of 51-63 DEG C., and a characteristic infrared absorption spectrum as shown in the figure. The Specification gives particulars of Rf values in various solvent systems, of the X-ray diffraction pattern of crystalline desideus and of its nuclear molecular resonance spectrum. By reaction with perchloric acid, desideus forms a perchlorate of molecular weight of 844.
