PURPOSE: A method for controlling a flying height between a head and a disk and an apparatus for controlling the same are provided to secure the reliability of the drive by preventing the contact between the head and the disk during the operation of the drive if the size of the recording current and the value of the overshoot set to a threshold value. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling a flying height between a head and a disk includes the steps of: (310) changing the recording current in response to the temperature or the overshoot value of the recording current; (320) determining whether the head of the hard disk drive is contact to the surface of the disk in response to the recording current or the change of the overshoot value of the recording current or not; and (330) setting the recording current generating the magnetic field contacting the head and the surface of the disk or the overshoot value of the recording current to the threshold value, respectively.
