PURPOSE: A method for operating a portable terminal using side keys is provided to assign menus to side keys when a folder is closed after rotating a display, and to operate the assigned menus even when a keypad is covered, thereby using basic menu functions regardless of a position of the display. CONSTITUTION: If an exclusive function of using side keys is executed in a terminal, a system uses the side keys with a predetermined preset function. If the terminal does not use the side keys exclusively, the system receives a user input by giving selection functions to the side keys. The system automatically converts the side keys into proper functions according to a corresponding mode, and displays the functions of the side keys on a screen neighboring with the side keys. More than one side key is combined together in order to optimally use the selection functions, according to an operational mode of the terminal.
