PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a multi-branched macromonomer capable of introducing a polymerizable functional group to a multi-branched polymer obtained from an AB<SB>2</SB>type monomer under a mild condition, capable of regulating a molecular weight, and capable of narrowing a molecular weight distribution. SOLUTION: The method for producing the multi-branched macromonomer comprises competitively carrying out a reaction for forming a multi-branched structure by carrying out a nucleophilic substitution of a compound having an active methylene group neighboring to an electron-attracting group, and a leaving group in the nucleophilic substitution reaction of the active methylene group in one molecule in the presence of a basic compound by using a compound having the active methylene group neighboring to the electron-attracting group and not having the leaving group in the nucleophilic substitution reaction of the active methylene group as a nuclear, and a reaction for carrying out the nucleophilic substitution of a compound having an ethylenic double bond and the leaving group in one molecule with the multi-branched chain, or successively carrying out the reactions in separated steps.
