The laser has a pumping light source (5) with at least one laser diode array used for pumping the solid laser-active material (1) in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the laser beam (8) extending through the latter, with a cylindrical lens (6) focusing each pumping laser beam onto the laser-active material, the pumping laser beams reflected by a boundary surface within the laser-active material opposite the incident surface, or by an external reflector at the rear of the boundary surface.
