PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a lubricant layer which is provided for the purpose of a magnetic recording medium and dispenses with heat treatment for orientation of lubricant molecules. SOLUTION: The method comprises immersing the medium into a lubricant solution containing the lubricant having a main chain component and a terminal component which is bonded to at least one terminal of the main chain component and has the chemical properties different from those of the main chain component within one molecule, bonding the lubricant by association to the surface of the medium through the terminal component and orienting the main chain component toward the surface of the medium.
