PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively eliminate preconversion noise without worsening image quality. SOLUTION: Input image data represented by a first color system are converted into output image data represented by a second color system by applying preconversion processing to the input image data. The color system can be quickly converted by doing this, but on the other hand, since the preconversion noise is superimposed upon the image data, preconversion noise is eliminated by performing smoothing processing. In such a case, the degree of smoothing is set in accordance with the resolution of the output image data, and it is thereby possible to effectively avoid an image being blurred by smoothing while eliminating noise.
