PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reliable optical module and a reliable optical transmission apparatus which have a simple structure and are suitable for a low-cost optical transmission system. SOLUTION: In a semiconductor optical element which is mounted with junction down on a mount substrate, part of electrodes formed on a surface of the element which faces the mount substrate are covered with an insulation film, and the insulation film for covering the electrodes is in contact with soldering metal of the mount substrate. Consequently, a reaction between the electrodes of the optical element and the soldering metal of the mount substrate can be prevented without degrading the thermal conduction between the semiconductor laser and the mount substrate. At the same time, the diffusion of the soldering metal into the semiconductor can be prevented, thereby increasing the reliability of the semiconductor laser which is mounted with junction down.
