<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical receiver which is optimized for high-speed response by further reducing parasitic inductance and parasitic capacitance. <P>SOLUTION: The optical receiver comprises a PD 2 for receiving an incident light from an optical fiber 10, a preamplifier IC 3 for amplifying an electrical signal from the PD 2, a submount 4, on which the PD 2 and the preamplifier IC 3 are mounted on the same plane, and a package 5, on which the submount 4 is mounted. The PD 2 and the preamplifier IC 3 are connected directly to each other by a wire 8. Since the PD 2 and the preamplifier IC 3 are mounted on the same submount 4, the distance between the PD 2 and the preamplifier IC 3 is shortened, and therefore, the parasitic inductance and the parasitic capacitance are greatly reduced.
