PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect am accurate in-focus position in a short time. SOLUTION: An automatic focusing device is provided with a first in-focus position detection means 121 which uses a photoelectric conversion means other than an imaging means 103 to detect a distance to an object and detects an in-focus position of a lens system and a second in-focus position detection means 121 uses the imaging means 103 to sample the contrast of the object and detects an in-focus position. After a focus lens is moved near the in-focus position detected by the first in-focus position detection means 121, the final in-focus position is determined on the basis of the in-focus position detected in the vicinity of the in-focus position by the second in-focus position detection means 121, and a sampling condition of the second in-focus position detection means 121 is set in accordance with an aperture value of the lens system 101 set by an aperture control means for switching apertures or the number of recording pixels set by a setting means for setting the number of recording pixels in recording an image.
