The medium (10B) comprises a magnetic recording layer (16) formed over a substrate. The layer has a magnetic flux modulation characteristic with a standard deviation of less than or equal to 0.06, and an average thickness of less than or equal to 0.15 microns, and exhibits a coercivity of greater than 2000 Oersteds. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) magnetic tape recording system; and method of producing magnetic recording layer with preset magnetic flux modulation characteristic.
