PURPOSE: A composition for rising of smooth muscle contractions in the gastrointestinal tract, which is produced in the caramelization process of sugar is provided. It has the possibility of being developed as a drug for rising the contraction by specifically acting on the smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal tract causing no effects on another smooth muscle such as the aorta. CONSTITUTION: The composition for rising of smooth muscle contractions in the gastrointestinal tract is produced by alkalinizing an aqueous solution of sugar and then heating, adding an alkali salt to the aqueous solution of sugar and then heating, or reacting reducing sugar with amine, dehydrating, polymerizing and then purifying. It has tissue specificity and has an effect of rising spontaneous contraction of the smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal tract. The sugar is monosaccharide of hexose and pentose, and disaccharide.
