PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a moisturizing agent containing alginic acid and/or its salt having a relatively low molecular weight as an active component and provide an external preparation for skin formulated with the moisturizing agent and having excellent moisturizing and roughened skin improving effects. SOLUTION: The moisturizing agent having high solubility and low viscosity and accordingly convenient for use is composed of one or more substances selected from alginic acid and its salt having an average molecular weight of 10,000-100,000 and the external preparation for skin contains the moisturizing agent.
