The differential (2) has two compensation housing parts, e.g. gray cast iron cage (16) and cover (22), and a plate edge ring of different material, fastened to each other by two weld seams (15,28). The edge ring is laser-welded to the cage via one of the seams. The ring is of case hardened steel, or forged. The differential has four compensation wheels (39a,b). One of the compensation parts is of cast iron, the other part carries coupling claws (35) of a differential pawl and is of low alloy forged steel. The min. diameter (23) at the joint face between the housing parts is larger than the diameters of the wheels in the differential.
